Part Fifteen

In 1983 the BCN Society, under the then Chairman John Phillips, undertook to signpost the main junctions. The first post was erected on the island at Old Turn Junction (then known as Farmers Bridge Junction but we won't go into all that again!) on May 21 st, 1983 and was soon followed by many others. The most recent was at Horseley Fields in Wolverhampton, which appeared in the summer of 2004. The BCNS's Explorer Scheme was set up to encourage people to visit those junctions which have, over the years, been graced with the slender signposts erected by the Society.

This series of articles intends to have a fresh look at the junctions, see what has changed in the intervening years and, hopefully, to encourage others to go out and become Explorers themselves. The scheme is still in operation and details are available from the coordinator, Phil Clayton, address:-211 Marsh Lane, Wolverhampton WV10 6SA.

The junctions were all numbered in the BCNS Signpost Trail booklet published and this series will follow that order.

Windmill End Junction

Two and a half straight miles from Dudley Port Junction takes the traveller through Netherton Tunnel to one of the best known junctions on the BCN.

Windmill End was another junction, which became a junction as a result of improvements to the system. The Dudley No.2 Canal, incorporated into the BCN in 1846, meandered about through Netherton before heading south east to Gosty Hill and Lapal tunnels and a junction with the Worcester and Birmingham at Selly Oak.
When the Netherton Tunnel was built a loop of the Dudley canal around Bumblehole was cut off by the southern approach. This loop itself was later badly affected by mining subsidence and is now the two seperate arms of Bumblehole and Boshboil.

A "bosh" was the water tank ot trough used to cool tools in a rolling mill or forge. North of the arm Boshboil pool has as its centrepiece a mound of cinder, the scant remains of the furnaces which stood here. In the middle of the erstwhile loop Bumble Hole Lake was a clay piy, which now acts as a storm water balancing lake. To the north of Windmill End Junction stood Gadds Green Reservoir, used from 1793 to 1910 to feed the locks round at Parkhead. Subsidence caused its demise but part of the dam can still be made out. Houses and playing field now occupy the site.

There is a fine variety of bridges on and around the junction, ranging from the black and white cast iron Toll End Works ones to the solid brick structure which carried the tramway from Windmill End Colliery to its basin on the loop. Also in evidence are the brick piers of the former GWR Netherton and Halesowen Branch. Look out for some fine Wood & Ivery, Albion Brickworks, West Bromwich copings with the name arranged in a Stafford knot under the junction bridge. BCNS signpost no.21, sponsored by the Society, was erected in 1984.

Cobbs Engine House dominates the scene as it has since it was built in 1831 to pump water from Windmill End Colliery. Water was always a problem in the pits on the Stour Valley side of the South Staffordshire coalfield and Cobbs housed one of many beam engines set up on local mines.
With the opening of the Netherton Tunnel the water, which had previously flowed into local streams, was discharged into the canal. This was a substantial volume, for 367,000 gallons a day could be abstracted from the 525 foot deep shaft. In 1877 the South Staffordshire Mines Drainage Commission became responsible for drainage operations and worked Cobbs to pump from several collieries in the area. A sorry combination of mismanagement and stoppages led to the failure of the SSMDC which, in 1921, was reporting that the greater part of the exposed coalfield was unworkable; like a waterfilled rabbit warren, even though over forty million tons of coal was estimated to remain in the ground. Indeed it was reckoned at the time that 61 tons of water had to be shifted for every ton of coal won.

Cobbs, the last SSMDC pumping engine to work, finally ceased operating in 1928 and the Newcomen type engine went to Henry Ford's museum in Michigan two years later. The three storey, red brick engine house stands empty with its square, tampering chimney rising to a height of ninety five feet. A potent symbol of the region's industrial past, the building is listed and stands in the landscaped surroundings of Warren's Hall Park. Climb to the top of the nearby pit bank for a bird's eye view of the area.

There are real birds a plenty around the junction. Ducks, geese and swans abound under the watchful eye of the Bumble Hole and Warrens Hall Local Nature Reserve Visitor Centre.

Windmill End has been the site of several canal rallies and festivals over the years. The IWA's 1991 National brought an estimated 380,000 visitors as well as 787 boats to the junction over the August Bank Holiday. The Black Country Boating Festival is another well established event, having been held for the 23rd time this September and a fine time is to be had by anyone who attends this annual bash. A couple of months ago, Windmill End saw the re-enactment of the opening of the Netherton Tunnel, 150 years to the day, with a parade of boats, brass band, celebrates in full Victorian regalia and the mayors of Sandwell and Dudley shaking hands on the bridge.
Windmill End copes admirably with all this and is still a wonderfully evocative place at seven o'clock on a misty morning when there's just the usual three men and their dogs!

Signpost Trail

Introduction

In 1983 the B.C.N.S under the guidance of John Phillips, Chairman at the time, undertook to Signpost the junctions of the BCN. Being a very complicated system, many boaters and walkers tended to stick to the Main Line to avoid getting lost. It was felt that given an indication of their destination they would be encouraged to explore the little used branches and loops which are a feature of the BCN.

This booklet issued by the Society is designed to show you some of the signposts, via Kevin Maslins first class photographs, at the same time give you some ideas for cruising, with a route round the BCN designed to take in the whole system. Perforce some parts are repeated, but you can pick up the route where ever you join the system.

All the signposts, a list appears on the reverse of the fold out map, were manufactured originally by the Royal Label Factory (Ceased trading in 2001, patterns now held by another company) and in 1983 cost around £400 each, paid for mainly by the BCNS with the occasional Sponsor. (We wish they cost that much today, ie double that and add a bit more). Typically they stand 14 feet above ground level, with a steel post and aluminium cast arms.

A few practical words about the use of the guide, junctions are given Way Point numbers. Distance/Locks/Time are shown, for example as 1/8/3. (parts of a mile are treated as decimals ie half a mile= 0.5) Followed by some relevant remarks. OPTIONS, if taken, will push you down some arms or take you to the joining extremities of the system. The only real answer is GO AND SEE FOR YOURSELF

Finally it is recommended that you use this booklet in conjunction with a BCN guide , like Pearson's BCN Canal Companion or the many others to give you in depth information.

Which ever way at Tipton Junc follow sign for Stourbridge and end up in Black Country Museum. Allow a full day at Museum.
